Tim and Josie’s Kimpton Margot Elopement

Tim and I recently decided to break tradition and host an intimate Sydney elopement for our own wedding. This time, we were the bride and groom, joined by our nearest and dearest, including our unborn son.

Tim and I met during a music audition orchestrated by our friend Matt, leading to the birth of our band, Duke. Tim surprised me with a heartfelt proposal during a “babymoon”, making our engagement extra special.

Choosing the perfect venue was a challenge for us, given our extensive experience in the wedding industry. We settled on the Kimpton Margot, a dog-friendly, Art Deco hotel where Duke had previously performed. Our decision was based on its unique style, excellent food, and convenience, as well as being easily accessible for our guests.

For our wedding, Tim and I aimed for a modern, sophisticated, and luxurious yet relaxed vibe. We made a few personal touches to our celebration, such as an intimate first dance and heartfelt vows that brought tears to our eyes.

We credit our standout vendors, including hair and makeup artist Maria from Mia Loves Pretty, floral designer Elise Polito, celebrant Lisa Parker, and photographers Fiona & Bobby, for their exceptional contributions to the day. In A Maze captured the event beautifully in their videography.

Tim and I also created playlists for different parts of the day, adding a personal touch to our celebration. We’d like to offer some words of wisdom, emphasising the importance of trusting your vendors and accepting help when offered.

With the birth of our son, Arthur, Tim and I now embrace the joys and challenges of parenthood, cherishing the newest addition to our family.

We were delighted to have our elopement featured by our amazing friends over at Wedshed. To read more about our special day, click here.

5 Key Things to Consider When Having a Friend MC Your Wedding

Having a close friend serve as your wedding’s master of ceremonies (MC) can add a wonderfully personal touch to your big day. Who better to guide your guests through all the events and keep things flowing smoothly than someone who knows you both and wants to see your wedding go perfectly?

However, it’s important to remember a few key factors when selecting which friend to entrust with this crucial role at your wedding. Choose wisely; your friend can infuse your reception with humor, heartfelt moments, and a smooth flow. Make the right pick, and avoid potential awkwardness or logistical problems.

Here are 5 essential things to consider when deciding which friend you should have MC your wedding. Big shout-out to our friend, Marriages Celebrant Marry Us Gary for these awesome tips!

For a Full Wedding MC Script and Guide click here.

Use Discount Code: EE15 for 15% off all MC Scripts and Courses

1. Pick Someone Truly Confident and Comfortable with Public Speaking

Your wedding MC needs to command the attention of all your guests throughout the reception events. This requires strong public speaking abilities and plenty of confidence.

Choosing a friend who seems nervous or reluctant about grabbing the microphone and addressing the crowd likely won’t go well. You want someone who enthusiastically embraces the spotlight rather than shrinks under it.

When considering which friends to think, reflect on who has experience with public speaking, performing on stage, leading groups, or teaching classes. Their existing presentation and communication skills will transfer seamlessly to leading your wedding festivities.

Only go with a close friend if they know public speaking. No matter how well they know you, they may freeze up or feel incredibly anxious trying to MC your wedding.

2. Select a Friend Who Knows You Both Very Well as a Couple

An MC who truly understands you both as individuals and as a couple will be able to infuse personal touches throughout your wedding events. They can incorporate little insider references that resonate with your family and friends in attendance.

Choose a friend who has known you intimately for a long time and witnessed your relationship blossom from the start. Consider who has been present for many milestones and shared experiences throughout your courtship.

Ideally, pick someone who attended your first date, saw you fall in love, and has gotten to know your respective personalities, quirks, and bond as a couple over the years. This insight will allow them to seamlessly interject humour and heartfelt moments tailored perfectly to you two.

3. Make Sure They Are Responsible, Organised and Reliable

Your wedding MC has a lot to juggle – leading events, making announcements, introducing wedding party members and speakers, and keeping everything on schedule. This requires stellar organisational skills and a sense of responsibility.

Carefully consider if the friend you have in mind is generally prompt, prepared, and detail-oriented. You want someone who will take the MC duties seriously rather than arrive haphazardly ready to wing it.

Ensure you pick a friend who will follow your outlined reception schedule, remember cues for activities or speeches, and will get sidetracked socializing or drinking less during the event. Choose someone you can trust to carry out this key role with care.

4. Find a Friend Who is an Articulate, Quick-Witted Storyteller

The best wedding MCs engage guests with lively storytelling, spur-of-the-moment humor, and well-delivered announcements tailored to unfolding events. Having a way with words and quick comedic timing is crucial.

Think about friends who frequently have you doubled over in laughter with their anecdotes and witty observations in social settings. Consider lively, well-spoken friends who command attention when recounting stories at get-togethers.

Your MC should be able to captivate your wedding guests with amusing yet heartfelt speech content. Be sure to pick someone whose humor and sentiment you appreciate and feel reflects your relationship positively.

5. Select Someone Adaptable to Unexpected Changes

Weddings go differently than the meticulous plans you’ve made. Your MC needs to be ready to adapt smoothly when unavoidable hiccups occur, like the DJ’s equipment malfunctioning or the caterer running behind.

Choose a friend who can keep calm under pressure and gracefully improvise when needed. You want someone who can maintain their composure and quickly solve problems, not add to the stress.

Ensure your MC is flexible enough to adjust the wedding program and keep guests happy through unexpected transitions or disappointments. Their composure and adaptability will ensure your reception stays fun no matter what surprises pop up.

Why Having a Friend MC Your Wedding is a Great Choice:

Personal Touch -Your friend will infuse humor, meaningful moments, and references tailored just for you as a couple into the reception events.

Comfort Level – You likely won’t have to give your close friend stage directions or worry about offensive material. Their knowledge of you will guide them appropriately.

Rapport with Guests – A friend MC already knows many of your wedding guests, making them feel more engaged and receptive to their humor and guidance.

Value for Money – You get all the benefits of a professional MC at a fraction of the cost.

Memories – Your friend MC has become part of your wedding memories for years.

Carefully selecting which warm, funny, and reliable friend you’ll have MC your reception is a key wedding planning decision. Follow these tips to choose someone who will flawlessly guide your guests through all your reception events with personalised panache. Lean on a friend with stellar public speaking skills, sharp wit, and a deep understanding of you as a couple, and your reception is guaranteed to be special and fun.

JT and Isabel’s Love Fiesta with Upside Down Events

JT and Isabel’s elegant Ceremony

JT and Isabel had their beautiful day on the Lawn, at the wonderful Ottimo House in Denham Court. Isabel gracefully walked down the aisle to the sounds of the Duke Duo’s cover of Somewhere Only We Know by Lily Allen.

Both JT and Isabel requested that Duke choose the perfect songs for the atmosphere when the signing of the register was taking place, allowing for the perfect sounds of Marry Me by Train, covered by the Duke Duo.

Drinks and Canapes on the beautiful lawn with the Duke Duo

After the ceremony, guests were invited to the lawn bar for Canapés where games were played, drinks were opened and the Duke Duo could be heard.

Celebrating at their Ottimo House Reception

Guests then went inside to enjoy JT and Isabel’s reception, styled by Lilac and her incredible team at Upside Down Events.
With a feasting banquet table loaded with Asian delicacies, roving Magic by Andy Nunn, and live music by our Duke Quintet. The party was highlighted by their beautiful first dance to Vivir Mi Vida by Marc Anthony. This first dance then turned into a surprise “Silly Dance” called Choo Choo Wa.

The Duke quintet then kicked off the DanceFloor with some of JT and Isabel’s favourite party bangers!

The Pros and Cons of Live Music at a Wedding

Music plays such an integral part of any wedding day. From the ceremonial songs to the party – starting tracks, there will likely be a range of different musical numbers you will want to feature. But with so many different methods of delivery, it can be hard to know just how you want this music to be played.

Hiring a musician to perform live at your wedding provides a truly authentic and unique experience for you and your guests. But this approach may not be suited to everyone’s preferences, so in this post we will explore both a list of pros and cons of having live music as part of your wedding day itinerary.

The Pros Of Live Music

Bands can provide a tailored experience

There is something special about having a live musician at your wedding. The atmosphere created by the sound of a live instrument being played is unmatched, and will add to the overall ambiance of your big day. This atmosphere can set the perfect tone for any ceremony or reception, and bring a real sense of sophistication to the event.

Hiring a band that specialises in your favourite genre will make the performance that much more meaningful and memorable. You could even request they put their own spin on some classic song requests from other genres that your guests may be more familiar with, which will only add to the uniqueness of the performance.

Hiring a live band to perform at your wedding can create one of the most memorable moments of the day. Live music brings an energy that no recorded music can match and allows you to tailor the performance to your exact needs. Whether you choose a band specialising in classical, jazz, pop or rock music, a live performance will always be more meaningful and memorable than simply playing songs off a playlist.

A great cover band will also bring a wide range of music and song choices you can choose from, to elevate your wedding entertainment and cater for a wide range of tastes and preferences. Whether it’s your wedding ceremony or wedding reception, good quality live musicians should also be able to offer you a range of song selections and perform some of your favorite songs.

A Live Band will keep everyone entertained

Often, a DJ’s job is to get as many people to fill out the dancefloor as possible. However, not everyone will be feeling like dancing, and this type of entertainment can leave certain guests feeling excluded. Live music is an increasingly popular choice for many brides and grooms when it comes to entertainment at their wedding. Whether it’s a string quartet, a jazz band or a full-blown orchestra, there is nothing that compares to the experience of live music by a professional musician.

While weddings are synonymous with dancing, not everyone may be busting a move all night. But fear not! Even if you’re taking a break from twirling around, the band will still be putting on a show for you to sit back and soak up all the reception goodness. With a live performance, you don’t have to be up on your feet to enjoy the music. A great live band should be able to perform a variety of music to suit the type of wedding you’re planning whilst still providing an unforgettable experience. For anyone who doesn’t want to dance the night away, your wedding guests can still be thoroughly entertained by the special sounds of a live performance no matter what type of event you have in mind.

Live Music at a wedding can set the mood

Once you’ve thought carefully about the theme and general ambience you want to achieve at your wedding, you can perfectly align this with your musical choices throughout the day. Looking for romantic elegance during the ceremony? Hire an acoustic duo to serenade you in the aisle. Looking for a rocking Dance Floor all night? A full Band will keep guests energised and partying all night long.
Live music can add elegance and ambiance to weddings that guests won’t soon forget. With a variety of instruments in one band, you can also create a unique sound that no pre-recorded music can give your celebration. There is no better way to energise a room than with the help of live performers.

Since band members each have their own personality, guests will be engaged as they play. A good band should be able to adapt to the mood and needs of guests, so the musicians can interact with the guests and share some of their infectious energy! Live music at a wedding can be a great way to make the atmosphere more vibrant and entertaining. One of the major pros of having live music at a wedding is that it adds a personal touch to the celebration.

The cons of Live Music at a Wedding

The cost

As reported in this guide to sustainable weddings, roughly 10% of the average couple’s wedding budget will be spent on entertainment. More often than not, you can expect to pay a little more to have a live band or musician perform at your wedding than you would for a DJ or some of your other wedding vendors. According to research conducted by WeddingWire, the average wedding band costs couples $4,500 (just overAU$8,000), but this figure largely depends on a number of factors including location and the time of year.

Many couples will feel that it’s worth allocating a little more of their budget to the music in order to have this bespoke experience, so think carefully about whether or not it’s right for you, and always shop around for the best options. Alternatively ask your band for some alternative package options to suit your budget. Most bands can provide you with an affordable option if you’re working with a tight budget.

Needing adequate space for a Live Band

Another factor you must consider when exploring your musical options is the space you have available at the venue. While a DJ will still need some equipment, live bands will invariably require more space to set up and perform. So if you’ve booked an intimate, cosy venue, you will have to consider how much room a live band will take up. Of course, you could alternatively opt for just a
solo musician – a perfect approach if it’s an intimate vibe you’re looking for.

Is it worth having live music at your wedding?

In summary, the pros and cons of having live music at a wedding are dependent on the couple’s budget, the size of their venue, and their personal preference. Despite being more costly than DJs, there is no denying that a live performance can add something extra special to your big day. If you’re looking for something unique and bespoke, then this should be your musical option of choice.

In conclusion, live music can be a great addition to your wedding day, but it’s important to consider all the pros and cons before committing. Be sure to shop around for the best options for your budget and venue size, and explore different musical styles available so you can make the most of your special day!

Kylie and Jake’s Happy ever after

For Kylie and Jake, their special day took place at the wonderful Boathouse on Shelley Beach.

Testimonial

“After many years of watching DUKE perform at various events, it was an absolute dream to have them entertain at our wedding. DUKE was an absolute standout on the day and we received such lovely compliments. From ceremony to reception, they created the perfect playlist and combination of songs that was thoroughly enjoyed by all but also complimented us to a tee! Through the entire process they were very organised and prompt. Even with the craziness of rescheduling dates and sudden changes, they were flexible, understanding and super positive. The little things on the night did not go unnoticed either, and we truly appreciated their quick efforts to help clear the room to kick off the dancing! We can’t thank them enough and will forever be recommending to all our family and friends.”.
– Jake and Kylie

Although Jake and Kylie had whisked away earlier in the year and eloped with their nearest and dearest, Duke had the honour to perform for them when they shared their vows once again for Friends and Family post-Covid.

Duke performed at both their wedding ceremony and the reception at the Shelley Beach Boathouse. We were thrilled to re-live the night with the amazing photography from Alex Marks.

Surrounded by family and friends at their wedding Ceremony upstairs at Shelley Beach Boathouse, Kylie entered to the sounds of “Simply The Best” performed by the Duke Duo.

Festivities then kicked off downstairs, with our Duke Trio featuring Chris Gable, entertaining guests during Dinner and Dancing. Josie then wrapped up the night with a blazing DJ set.

Huge thanks to Kylie and Jake for having us be part of their amazing wedding day!

Tumbalong Park Christmas Extravaganza

As it does every year, Darling Harbour threw an incredible Christmas festival in 2022, which Duke had the honour to be a part of.

Great music, Live entertainment, Incredible food, and the appearance of a man in red. What else can you ask for in a Christmas festival? It was a great weekend for the family.

Duke was thrilled to perform alongside amazing bands such as kaleidoscope dream – an 8 piece band featuring the voice stars Adam Katz and Nadia Leigh providing flawless R&B vocals, Soulganic – not just a band, but a musical experience that left the audience energised, and Summit – lead by the 2021 Australian Jazz pianist of the year, Matt Thompson, who got the audience in the spirit with their jazzy covers of Christmas classics.

Bella and Matt at their musical wedding at Curzon Hall

When musicians choose a wedding band

When you, yourself are a musician choosing a wedding band is not as easy as it sounds. The bar is high and the band must exceed your expectations. This is what Duke brought to the musical wedding of Bella and Matt at Curzon Hall.

Curzon Hall is renowned for its historic character and graceful presence. The magical Banquet Room is renowned for its architectural features and magnificent chandeliers. This grand pillarless ballroom with high ornate ceilings and natural light is a fairytale come to light (with a little sprinkle of fairy dust). Our 6-piece Duke band had the pleasure of performing for 150 guests at Bella and Matt’s magical (and musical) wedding reception.

Just a few guest performers

Bella and Matt’s Black Tie wedding provided the perfect opportunity for them to invite some of their closest friends to perform one of their favourite songs “Gonna fly now” by Bill Conti accompanied by the Duke Band. Yes, they were all musicians!! We performed this song as their entrance to their wedding reception and it was received with rapturous applause!

Curzon Hall photoshoot – Bella and Matt’s beautiful day

Bella and Matt chose the perfect photographer (Images by Kevin) to celebrate their love. We love Kevin’s work, he’s the perfect photographer for the easy-going couple. Less stress = more joy, and there’s no awkward poses ever!

Bella and Matt had amazing weather for a photoshoot in the stunning Curzon Hall Gardens, with the breathtaking backdrop of the Curzon Castle.

Bella & Matt

Bella and Matt’s First Dance

Bella and Matt performed their amazing first dance to the sounds of Dukes cover of “Shallow” by Lady Gaga. With a pretty solid amount of performing background between them, their First Dance was absolutely something to behold!

This beautiful dance was then followed by an abundant amount of dancing from guests. We had a blast performing some of our favourite D-Floor hits and bangers.

Bella & Matt

The night was then brought to a close to the amazing sounds of our very own Chris Gable and his rendition of “Burn For You” By John Farnham. All in all it was a fantastic evening celebrating two very talented and special people.

Thanks for having us, Bella and Matt!

The “Thankyou’s”

Duke music would like to acknowledge all of the fellow vendors who were a pleasure to work with and who made the wedding of Bella and Matt possible.

Tumbalong Park Winter Festival, Darling Harbour

Darling Harbour put on two weekends of frosty fun featuring the best beats and eats in Sydney. Our Duke Band were thrilled to be a part. Tumbalong Park came alive with DJs and bands playing free live music, foodie markets, outdoor bar, firepits and igloos. Every night finished with a bang by Cockle Bay with fireworks. It was one of the best things to do in Sydney to warm up this winter!

We were delighted to perform alongside the likes of bonafide party starters Furnace & The Fundamentals, one of Australia’s most entertaining acts, Hot Potato Band; and pop and retro-rock Soul Movers, led by frontwoman Lizzie Mack together with the legendary OG-Red-Wiggle, Murray Cook. More acts to heat up the chilly winter nights included our good friends from Sir Archer, along with DJs Beth Yen and our pal DJ Lauren Neko.

Tumbalong Park was transformed into a winter warmer foodie market, offering up a hot pot of food and drinks pop-ups to warm everyone’s bellies. With so many stalls and food trucks serving up some awesome bites from the likes of Burgerhead, Firepop, Gelatissimo, Urban Gypsy Cafe, Toastiesmith, Bubble Nini, Okonomiyaki, The Fudge Shop, Wafflo, and more!

Guests would warm up with mulled wine and craft beers from one of the pop-up bars in the park and dance the day away to the live music pumping from the Tumbalong Park stage.

Special thanks to Winederella for Josie’s ‘Make Wine Not War’ T-Shirt, which she proudly wore on stage for this performance. It honours all those in the Ukraine who are surviving the war. Proceeds from the sale of this shirt are being donated to various appeals which are helping refugees from Ukraine. We are thinking of all our friends in the Ukraine and hoping this misery comes to an end soon. Get Your HERE.

Brendan and Bella’s luxury wedding at one of Berry’s most exclusive venues

It’s been a little while between drinks / weddings, no thanks to Covid-19. But today we were so delighted to receive these photos from Photographer, Kelly Tunney.
Our Groom and Bride, Brendan and Bella, married in February 2020 at the stunning wedding venue, Jasper’s Berry, on the South Coast of New South Wales. We love performing at Jasper’s specifically because of the endless possible places for joy to be found. The grounds are stunning, and their wedding service team are exceptional. Rosie and her team at Jaspers always go above and beyond to ensure her clients and any external suppliers are looked after.
Our Duke Music artists performed for Bella and Brendan as an Acoustic Duo during their Canapés service, and then as a Quartet for their Dinner music and Dance-floor. The party was a hit, with the dance-floor starting even before dinner had finished being eaten.

Thank you to Kelly Tunney for these lovely snaps, and to Brendan and Bella for having us be part of your wonderful wedding day.

Jess and Chris’ beachy boho wedding

Our couple, Jess and Chris, wed on 1 February 2020 at the Beachside Dojo Manly, Australia and the day, planned by Cloud 9 Event Management, could not have been more perfect!

We had the honour of bringing music to their Northern Beaches wedding and let us tell you, it was a night to remember!

The bridesmaids and groomsmen dawned a beautiful navy blue which perfectly accented Jess and Chris’ Beachy Boho Wedding ceremony and reception decor, featuring white florals and pops of greenery with Monstera leaves and tropical palms, arranged and styled by Mabel & Elsie.

Their first look

Jess and Chris had their first look and were all smiles when he turned around and saw her in a beautiful, spaghetti strap A-line gown which featured a low back and a deep illusion front plunge.

About their Ceremony and Reception

The couple chose to have live music at their ceremony and reception which is what we truly specialise in.
Jess was accompanied down the aisle by her father to a live performance of Ruelle’s “I Get To Love You” performed by Duke.
Friends and family attended their intimate ceremony. Saskia from Dovetail Celebrants married the couple, and we’d be lying if we said a few tears weren’t shed!
After being announced as husband and wife, they recessed back down the aisle to Duke’s rendition of “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors.
The perfect choice of song, as it was most definitely one of the best days of their life!

Moving into cocktail hour, guests enjoyed live music performed by Duke who was also accompanied by Chris Gable. They entertained the guests throughout dinner before heading into speeches that Jess and Chris gave to one another with their flower girl—also their daughter—present!

After cutting their two tier ombré blue cake, which featured gold accents and florals seen throughout their decor, the couple headed out to the rocks for some stunning sunset photos, captured by the very talented Ripple Weddings.

Sunset photos beachside in Manly

Returning from their portraits, they shared their first dance together to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”. After that, it was time to get the rest of the night started! Duke DJ’d the remainder of their reception performing songs that had guests up and dancing the rest of the night. (Not to mention, plenty of songs that were dear to Jess and Chris’ hearts).

Congratulations Jess and Chris on your perfect wedding at the Beachside Dojo Manly.

To see everyone having such a great time on the dance floor is the reason why we love what we do.

Are you looking for live music for your wedding day? We serve couples in Sydney, Melbourne, and beyond! Get in touch and let’s start planning (it’s music to our ears!)
